What Elopement Activities You Can Include In Your Big Day

Elopement Day Activities : How To Make The Most Of Your Elopement Day

pinetop elopement

So… you want to get married in a way that represents you as a couple and ditch the stress of a traditional wedding? Our couples come to us from all over the world wanting to plan their dream wedding in an incredible scenic location, but your wedding day is so much more than just a pretty spot to take photos! Sure, elopement days do not include the many activities that traditional weddings hold but that does not make it any less of an experience! Instead of focusing time and money on a huge production for guests, couples are deciding to elope and instead prioritize a day filled with places and activities that are special to them as a couple.

There are many ways to get married, your wedding day does not have to be a one size fits all. If skipping the traditional festivities and planning a once in a lifetime experience sounds more up your alley, consider eloping!

Aside from the vows and ceremony, what do couples actually do on their elopement day? When it comes to helping our clients with planning, this is always the first question we get! We created this to help more couples discover that their elopement day can be anything they dream of and to spark some inspiration on different activities that can be included on the big day to help your experience be unforgettable and everything you could wish for on a wedding day.

Let’s dive in, what is an Elopement?

An elopement can mean different things to anyone. An elopement can be a quick courthouse wedding, a ceremony with just the two of you, an intimate gathering to get married, I could go on and on. For me personally, an elopement is an intimate experience that focuses on the couple and creating an intentional celebration of your love. When couples choose to elope, they prioritize themselves and their experiences instead of feeling obliged to perform in traditional activities that they do not align with.

Couples elope because they want the type of wedding day that they truly enjoy and are excited about. Your wedding day should never feel like a stressful time and planning should not feel like you are checking a box off of a list. a day they want to relive time and time again. Eloping does not necessarily mean it is only you and your partner either. Your celebration can include family, your closest friends or even just the two of you if you prefer it that way. The beauty in eloping is that it can truly look however you want.
A common misconception with elopements are that they are somehow looked at as less of an experience than a traditional wedding, which is absolutely not the case. Elopement days are just as important, and in my personal belief, even more special because you are choosing to go against traditional beliefs to create a day that is tailored to you and your relationship. You deserve just as much documentation and celebration regardless of the way you decide to say “I do.”

How could an elopement even last all day if it’s just me and my partner?

Listen, I totally get how a full day of coverage can seem like a bit much when there is only two of you. The idea of having photos clicked for a full 6-8 hours on your wedding day can feel daunting, but the day goes by so quickly! While it is not a traditional wedding yes, IT IS STILL YOUR WEDDING DAY!
For us, we absolutely are not clicking photos all day long! We create an experience for our couples, so while we may be together the entire day do not stress about needing to be photo ready at all times. Our time together could look like cooking a meal, writing vows, going on a hike, laughing together, exploring new places and stargazing and boom! 6 hours. Your wedding day will truly be a whirlwind of a day and I promise you will want every second documented.

Your wedding day deserves documentation, whether it’s just the two of you or with a full guest count. With traditional weddings it is standard to get 7+ hours of coverage. From start to finish traditional weddings are documented, what makes your wedding day deserve any less?

How to Start Planning Your Elopement Activities

Close your eyes and envision your absolute perfect day from start to finish. Are you enjoying a quiet morning together sipping coffee and reading a book or writing your vows? Are you cooking lunch together and having a picnic at your favorite spot? Are you taking a new hike or trying something brand new for the first time like zip lining or a hot air balloon? Are you in the desert in Arizona or chasing a waterfall in Iceland? Are you traveling to a new location or somewhere familiar and sentimental?

When it comes to envisioning the day, try and let go of realistic expectations and what seems logical. Focus on creating a day that will align with you, give you joy and excitement and be the most incredible experience of your life. That’s what your wedding day should be about! Ignore what social media says to do, what your family expects of you and what society deems appropriate as a wedding. Your wedding day is all about celebrating your love in the most intentional way.

20+ Elopement Activities You Can Enjoy On Your Wedding Day

Elopements are not a one size fits all. Your elopement experience should be so much more than just exchanging your vows and snapping a few quick photos. When it comes to deciding what activities to include on your wedding, ask yourself what makes us happy? What do we enjoy doing together? Is there a new place we want to see or a new thing we have been dying to try out? Is there a sentimental activity we can incorporate? The options are truly endless! Here are a few of our favorite ideas you can incorporate to have an out of this world elopement experience!

Spring Wedding at The Paseo | Arizona Wedding Photographer

Spring Wedding at The Paseo | Arizona Wedding Photographer

There is nothing more breathtaking that a spring wedding at The Paseo. The Paseo is breathtaking and a venue that couples come from all over the world to have their wedding day at. The large windows reflecting the superstitions, jaw dropping view of the Arizona desert and whimsical reception place is a show stopper for all guests.

For Bree and Brandon, being able to enjoy the outdoors and nature with their friends and family was a huge must for their wedding day – they chose a late spring wedding at The Paseo and it was the most incredible day surrounded by so much love. It was an absolute party!

Bree got ready for her big day with no other than her beautiful mother. It is so important to us as photographers to give some space to mothers and daughters on the wedding day to help each other get ready and really soak the moments in leading up to walking down the aisle. A first look with her father and then Brandon’s tearful first look was next. Doing a first look at your wedding is always a yes from us! First looks not only give us extra time for photos prior to your ceremony but also give our couples that private quiet time to just enjoy each other before all of the wedding day chaos!

When it came to decorating for their Wedding at the Paseo, Bree and Brandon went all out. The decor was modern bohemian with lots of burnt orange, dried florals and pampas for days. The hanging florals in the reception space, head table with neon sign and lit candles and cactus napkin holders were the stars of the show for us though. It’s hard to compete with The Paseo’s natural beauty but the thoughtful touches of every detail that went into this incredible day only enhanced that beauty and created an absolutely breathtaking wedding space for their big day!

When it came to bridal party, Bree and Brandon said the bigger the better! They are truly such big party people they wanted their bridal parties to really be there to hype them up and celebrate all day long – and they did just that! The bridal parties personalities really brought so much fun to the wedding day, especially “the flower boys”. This was such a fun part of the ceremony and had guests in tears!

Bree and Brandon’s spring wedding at the Paseo was everything you could dream of. Something about saying “I do” in front of Arizona’s incredible Superstition Mountains just can’t be beat. If you are looking for a venue that can completely captivate guests while portraying Arizona’s beauty, The Paseo is the venue for you! One of our favorite things about being Arizona Wedding Photographers is the fact that we get to shoot at this dream venue so often it is nearly a second home to us after all these years!

ELOPING IN JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK

If you are wanting to elope in Joshua Tree, you have come to the right place! One of my favorite parts of being an Elopement and Wedding Photographer is helping our couples find incredible locations and helping them to plan their adventurous wedding day. INFORMATION ON HOW TO ELOPE IN JOSHUA TREE

ELOPE IN JOSHUA TREE : SEASONS & WEATHER

The best time of year to Elope in Joshua Tree is between the months of March to May or October to November when temperatures are lower averaging around 85 degrees. Eloping during one of these months will give you the best chance of good weather. You can absolutely do winter months as well, the bonus of a winter wedding in Joshua Tree is the chance of seeing some snow fall on the mountains and less crowds. Make sure you bring some extra warm layers because the wind does pick up around winter months and can give you a chilly surprise! Eloping at Joshua Tree during the summer is not usually recommended due to the high heat of the desert and not much coverage to allow couples to cool down. On average during summer months the desert can reach temperatures over 100 degrees so if you are set on a summer wedding, make sure you bring lots of water and consider light clothing that won’t give you too much extra heat! Joshua Tree can get very busy with tourists on weekends so to avoid crowds if possible consider eloping on a weekday or at sunrise!

ELOPE IN JOSHUA TREE : PERMITS & RESERVATIONS

In order to Elope in Joshua Tree, the national park requires a Special Park Use Permit. The Special Park Use Permit for the couple getting married that is $120 and your photographer will need a separate photo permit as well. If you decide on skipping the permit to save costs (please don’t!) there is a $500 fine in doing so if you get caught, so it is definitely best to follow the rules and keep you and your vendors covered so the wedding day is stress free!

Another thing to consider when you elope in Joshua Tree is how eco friendly this park is! A lot of wedding decor such as drones, candles, bubbles, smoke bombs, confetti are not allowed in the park. Remember to respect the national park and leave no trace!

HOW TO GET HERE

BY PLANE:

Phoenix Sky Harbor, AZ: This airport is in Arizona for those who may be flying into the state to experience the Grand Canyon, Sedona or Superstitions along the way. PHX is roughly 225 miles from Joshua Tree (roughly 3.5 hours).

John Wayne Airport, CA: This is a great alternative for those flying into California that want to avoid the chaos of LAX. SNA is only 122 miles from Joshua Tree (roughly 2.5 hours).

Palm Springs Airport, CA: Palm Springs is the very closest airport to Joshua Tree town, and is located just 39 miles away.

BY CAR:

Yucca Valley is a lot more limited in public transportation compared to larger cities. Renting a vehicle will be your best bet to get around the national park! There are three main entrances to Joshua Tree, you can access from the North, West and South. Make sure you take a trip prior to your wedding day to drive the roads and map out where exactly you want to go since the navigation systems in Joshua Tree can lead you off road into soft sands that may get you stuck!

JOSHUA TREE TOP 8 FAVORITE HIKES

When our couples reach out to us after deciding to Elope in Joshua Tree a huge standout to them is the out of this world rock formations and Joshua Trees that make you feel like you are on another planet. Although the rock formations and Joshua Trees are a main attraction for people all over the world, don’t let that fool you! Joshua Tree National Park is actually home to hundreds of different plant, mammal and bird species. Needless to say, you will never get bored if you decide to make a trip to the national park! There are so many off the path locations that couples can choose to elope in Joshua Tree at, but I will keep it simple for this post and share a few favorites that can accommodate weddings that have larger groups where family and a few friends plan to join you for your ceremony.

Hidden Valley Picnic Area

Turkey Flats

Split Rock

Porcupine Wash

Cap Rock

Rattlesnake Picnic Area

Quail Springs Picnic Area

Live Oak Picnic Area

BEST PLACES TO STAY

One of my favorite parts about Joshua Tree Elopements are the amazing Airbnb’s our couples have stayed at. There is just something about the way the Joshua Tree Airbnb’s are designed that feel so cozy and intimate but insanely stylish. Booking an Airbnb helps you have a beautiful space to get ready in, take a nice bath the morning of or find a stay that includes a jacuzzi to star gaze at night, a hammock to relax in during the day, the list goes on and on. Joshua Tree Airbnb’s do book fast though so once you have determined a date that you will be getting married make sure booking your stay is one of the next steps you take! Here are some articles to check out to find your dream Airbnb for your wedding experience!

ACTIVITIES & MORE

Joshua Tree is best known for it’s Dr. Suess like trees, rock formations and unforgettable scenery but it is so much more. The town of Joshua Tree, around 25 minutes from the middle of the park, is so charming and something out of this world. The town of Joshua tree has tons of welcoming shops with history of the National Park, places to eat, farmers markets and vintage shops all things that we have absolutely loved taking in when we visited. Aside from enjoying the town during your wedding experience, things you can explore during your wedding are can range from taking hikes through the national parks to an adventurous experience. A few of our favorite things to recommend to our couples eloping are off road jeep tours, rock climbing, experiencing soundbath meditation and hot air balloon rides.

joshua tree stargazing photos

Joshua Tree National park is probably one of the most unique and popular places for couples wanting to say “I do” in the desert. This desert landscape is covered in unique plants and rock formations and has the most unbeatable view for stargazing. There are so many hiking trails in the park, natural history sites and stores to visit nearby the charming town of Joshua Tree. It’s a no brainer that so many couples want to plan a Joshua Tree elopement in this incredible national park!

Cannon Beach Elopement : Planning Your Oregon Coast Elopement

Cannon Beach Elopement: A Guide To Planning Your Dream Elopement Day

cannon beach elopement hug point

Elopement Tips, Elopement Tricks, Elopement Locations

So you are looking to plan your Cannon Beach Elopement? Let me be the first to tell you how incredible this location is! The Pacific Northwest has many stunning coastal towns, with Cannon Beach being one of them. As an elopement photographer, I have documented elopements all over the United States and beyond, and documenting Cannon Beach Elopements has always been a personal favorite.

Having a Cannon Beach Elopement is absolutely perfect if you are wanting a dreamy beach wedding with the added beautiful moss-covered trees, mountains, nearby waterfalls, epic cliff overlooks, and perfect weather. A chance of rain can seem intimidating to some, and yes, Oregon weather is known for its frequent rainy days, but personally, I love the added sprinkles and moody weather in Oregon. It makes your photos that much more dramatic!

Cannon Beach is one of the more accessible locations to get to on the Oregon Coast as well, which is an extra added bonus if you are including family or friends who may not be into a big hike on the wedding day. This guide will cover some of our favorite places to hold your Cannon Beach Elopement, what to expect, some top-notch vendors local to the area, and nearby accommodations that you will love!

Scroll on to see our full Cannon Beach Elopement Guide!

Wedding Permits

When it comes to eloping at any state park, it is so important to do your research and make sure you are following the local guidelines. Unless you are planning on having a large wedding ceremony, you probably will not need a permit for your Cannon Beach Elopement; that being said, gatherings do not prohibit the public from also having access to the area, so this is where sunrise or sunset comes into play for a more intimate ceremony. As always, make sure to do your own research as guidelines can change, and you want to make sure you are covering all bases. You can find more permit information here!

Where To Hold Your Cannon Beach Elopement

Haystack Rock

Haystack Rock is definitely the most popular and well-known area to elope in Cannon Beach. The enormous rock formation can be seen as you look down the coast and is an incredible area to elope and get some jaw-dropping photos. It is a popular area, so keep that in mind when planning your cannon beach elopement and try to plan for a morning or early evening ceremony if possible!

Silver Point

At the southern end of Cannon Beach is Silver Point. A rocky stretch of beach with a smaller sea stack but still killer views. This part of the beach is not as popular and is not the easiest to access but could be a great option for an intimate elopement for a couple wanting to avoid crowds.

Ecola State Park

Ecola State Park is the whole package for a Cannon Beach Elopement. Ecola’s trails offer stunning cliffside views, lush green forests, secluded coves, and access down to the beach. This is a perfect location to have a mid-day ceremony, picnic, or hike through the forest before enjoying a sunset on the beach.

Hug Point

Hug Point is a stunning location near Cannon Beach with beautiful cliffs, hilly forests, and a waterfall right on the beach; how can you beat that? It is a beautiful rocky part of the coast with craggy ledges and coastal caves that draw people from all over the world to see this beautiful place.

Oswald West State Park

Oswald West State Park has a beautifully secluded sandy beach and miles of trails leading to breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. With beach views, waterfalls, and mountain views, this location has it all. His vast, scenic treasure is, without a doubt, one of the most spectacular parks in Oregon.

Best time of day to have your Cannon Beach Elopement

The best time to elope at Cannon Beach is in the early morning or early evening before sunset and on a weekday if possible. Weekends, especially in the summer, are a very busy time for Cannon Beach, so you will want to avoid holding your ceremony during these times if you are a more private person. Morning and evening are also keys to beautifully lit photos, you do not want to have that harsh sun in all of your photos, so making sure to research sunrise and sunset times while working with your photographer is so important to get those beautifully lit photos! Keep in mind that tide tables and weather forecasts are also big factors in locations you can access. At low tide, you are sometimes able to access locations that you can not. Otherwise, conditions can change quickly, though, so keep that in mind and plan safely!

What Weather To Expect For Your Cannon Beach Elopement

Going into your Cannon Beach Elopement with an open mind is key to having the best experience. It is not a secret that the Oregon coast is a wet place; how else would we get all of that beautiful lush greenery? With that being said, the likelihood of getting a little drizzle on your wedding day is pretty likely. Embrace it! There is so much beauty in the unknown of elopement days, and embracing the day as it comes can be such an incredible thing. The warmest months in Oregon are July, August, and September so keep that in mind if you want the best chance of a sunny beach elopement.

Where To Stay For Your Cannon Beach Elopement

Where you stay during your elopement is such a big part in the whole vibe of the day. We are huge fans of making a weekend or vacation out of your trip and unwinding in a cozy Airbnb or hotel nearby your destination, close to delicious restaurants and shops to make your experience that much better. Having a nice place to relax and unwind is key to having an amazing time! Here are a few of our personal favorites!

The Ocean Lodge for a more luxurious stay

Vendor Recommendations

Having great vendors for your Cannon Beach Elopement is the easiest way to ensure you have an experience of a lifetime. Finding vendors who are passionate about helping their couples have an incredible elopement experience is a must, especially if you are not from the Cannon Beach area and do not have an existing knowledge of local vendors.

Superstition Mountain Wedding with Cloth and Flame | Arizona Elopement Photographer

Superstition Mountain Wedding with Cloth and Flame

superstition mountain wedding

This spring we photographed an incredible Superstition Mountain Wedding with Cloth and Flame and I am so stoked to share it with you. Cloth and Flame is well known around the valley for the immersive and out of this world experience they provide their couples by bringing their wedding dreams to life. If you can imagine it, they can do it. Cloth and Flame is known for their ability to transform any outdoor space into the wedding of your dreams and this Superstition Mountain Wedding was just that.

Krista and John’s relationship together began in the Superstitions, so naturally they longed for their dream wedding day to take place in the Superstition Mountains as well. Superstition Mountains was a destination for all of their family and friends and so worth the trip from Michigan! There is nothing quite like the desert in the spring, warm, crisp evenings and sunsets like no other. In some places in the Superstitions you can even find Spring flowers in full bloom. A personal favorite of ours was the glamping style tents Cloth and Flame provided for the couple to get ready, it really tied together the outdoor desert vibe of their wedding.

When it came to decorating their Superstition Mountain Wedding with Cloth and Flame, Krista and John kept it dreamy and bohemian. The blush dried florals, rattan furniture, winding tables cape and chandeliers were to die for. We loved how they worked their decor around the beauty that the desert offers. Their bar sign with their dogs as the signature cocktail was a huge hit with guests as well and such a fun way to incorporate their fur babies since they couldn’t be a part of the actual wedding day.

One of the things they looked forward to most was the beautiful stargazing opportunity they had with having an outdoor wedding in the desert. They had a jaw dropping view of the superstitions as the sun set with a beautiful view of the stars after the sun went down. The chandeliers lit their dance floor and gave their dinner a super intimate and cozy feel. The couple snuck away for a few star gazing photos before dancing the night away under the stars, it was the perfect end to their dream Superstition Mountains wedding.

Eloping in Arches National Park : The Ultimate Guide | Arizona Elopement Photographer

The Ultimate Guide for Eloping in Arches National Park | Arizona Elopement Photographer

Eloping in Arches National park is a dream for couples residing in Utah and all over the world. Over the years we have had couples travel to have their wedding day captured in Utah’s enchanting and unique red rocks. Whether you are looking for a location with arches, mountains, cliffs, an outdoor adventure, or just incredible views, Arches National Park checks all boxes! This guide will tell you everything you need to know to elope at Arches National Park and plan your unique and incredible wedding day, we can not wait to help be a part of that process!

More about Arches National Park, Utah

Arches is known to be one of the most magical locations in Utah. Arches National Park lies north of Moab in the state of Utah. Bordered by the Colorado River in the southeast, it’s known as the site of more than 2,000 natural sandstone arches, such as the massive, red-hued Delicate Arch in the east. Long, thin Landscape Arch stands in Devils Garden to the north. Other geological formations include Balanced Rock, towering over the desert landscape in the middle of the park. The possibilities for Eloping in Arches National Park are endless. Being an Elopement Photographer has given us the chance to experience Arches National Park many times and it never ceases to take our breath away.

Having visited Arches National Park and experiencing first hand the incredible time you can have here, we have also had a chance to off-road in our Jeep. Being able to access those difficult off-road trails that couples come to love and desire for an epic overlook for photos! Couples are able to do Jeep Tours to access most spots but for a more intimate feel, we always recommend renting your own jeep for the weekend or jumping in the Jeep with us!

Eloping in Arches National Park : What to Wear

Depending on what time of the year you are planning on Eloping in Arches National Park is a major factor to consider! Arches National Park weather varies and depending on the month. You could be changing for your Elopement after a hike in hot weather or bundling up and trudging through snow! We shoot in Utah frequently and have truly seen it all. A few things we recommend to bring, hiking boots, water, an emergency bag, and a flashlight or headlamp if we are exploring a location where it could potentially get dark quickly.

eloping in arches national park sand dune arch

Eloping in Arches National Park : Weather

Arches National Park more often than not has beautiful weather year-round. However, it is Utah so you can expect bipolar weather here and there. Personally, I feel weather changes like a surprise rainstorm can make Elopement photos that much more epic! Typically Spring and Fall are our most popular dates for couples Eloping in Arches National Park. Spring is wonderful and if you are lucky you’ll find gorgeous spring flowers blooming. Fall is equally as charming with the leaves changing color and the cooler weather.

While we still photograph many Elopements during Summer and Winter, they are much less than the latter. Summer in Utah can be tricky as sometimes the temperature can reach above 100 degrees. Summer is also the monsoon season in the Southwest, so random flash floods can make it harder. Winter in Arches National Park can absolutely be a dream. The snow covering the red rocks is one of the most incredible sights to see. It is chilly so we always recommend our couples to bring layers, warm coffee or hot chocolate, and hand warmers!

Eloping in Arches National Park : Locations

arches national park delicate arch

One of the best parts about Eloping in Arches National Park is the variety in scenery Moab provides. Breathtaking overlooks, unique red rocks, jaw dropping sunsets and a beautiful view of the stars at night. This makes it the perfect destination for any couple to say “I do”. While we do keep some of our favorite spots a secret to keep our clients’ experience exclusive, we will share a few of our favorite spots below!

Delicate Arch

The hike to Delicate Arch is three miles long, part of the trail does have has a steep summit with elevation gains of 613 feet total, so we generally recommend this hike for our couples looking for a big adventure and with wiggle room on their amount of coverage. An added bonus: this trail is open year-round. Because of its epic views, Delicate Arch is the most crowded trail to hike. We recommend doing a sunrise elopement if possible to beat the crowds if you are set on Delicate Arch for your Arches National Park Elopement location!

Sand Dune Arch

For couples Eloping in Arches National Park wanting a unique but easily accessible location Sand Dune Arch is a no brainer! Perfect for a ceremony at any time of day, the easy .3-mile out-and-back trail is a good option for couples who do not want a long hike or need an easily accessible location for family members who can not hike.

Delicate Arch Viewpoint

This area gives you the opposite view of the trail from Delicate Arch in a 0.7-mile out-and-back trail. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 23 min to complete. This is a very popular area for hiking and walking, so you’ll likely encounter other people on your adventure but is another great option for couples who do not want a long hike but want to experience the beauty of eloping in Arches National Park!

Pine Tree Arch

Pine Tree Arch does not have easily seen path marks and can get quite a bit of traffic because of this but is definitely worth the foot traffic for this epic view! This trail is pretty quick and painless with a 1-mile trail leading up to the arch.

The Windows Section

The Windows Section, is considered by some to be the beating heart of Arches National Park. The area contains a large concentration of arches and is one of the most scenic locations in the park. North Window, Turret Arch, and Double Arch are just a few of the awe-inspiring expanses you’ll find in just over two square miles. Other named features in this area include Garden of Eden, Elephant Butte and Parade of Elephants. This section of the park offers both beauty and variety—hiking, sightseeing, stargazing, photography, and enjoyment for the whole family. If you are eloping in Arches National Park, this is a must see!

Landscape Arch

Landscape Arch is a 1.9-mile out-and-back trail near Moab, Utah. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 49 min to complete. In the spring couples can enjoy wildflowers and beautiful scenery all around. For couples eloping in Arches National Park this is a perfect adventure for those looking for a light amount of effort with jaw dropping views.

Panorama Point

Panorama Point offers wide-open views of Arches and the surrounding area. Located at the top of a hill, you can enjoy views of the La Sal Mountains, the Fiery Furnace, and even Devils Garden from your vehicle or at viewpoints along the parking area. Panorama Point is also an excellent place to stargaze and take in the night sky when you are eloping in Arches National Park.

Park Avenue

The Park Avenue Trail is one of the first major attractions within Arches National Park. It is a one-mile trail that follows the bottom of a canyon at the feet of some of the park’s gigantic and well-known monoliths. The lower trailhead is located on the Arches Entrance Road, 2.5 miles north of the visitors center, off to the north side of the road. The parking lot has a paved walkway that heads 320 feet to a Viewpoint. IF you are eloping in Arches National Park and are craving a stargazing adventure or a perfect place for a mid day picnic with a view, Park Ave is perfection!

Devils Garden Amphitheater

Your Guide For Finding The Perfect Elopement Location

No matter where in the world you and your partner decide to elope, the fact that you are making the decision to pledge your lives to each other in such a brave, meaningful and intentional way already makes your wedding day pretty dang perfect. Finding the perfect elopement location is just the cherry on top of that.

When it comes to helping our couples find the perfect elopement location there are several factors that come into play. It is so important to us to find hidden gem locations that cater to the needs of our couples, every couple is different – so naturally, so are each of the location guides we create. When narrowing down your locations you will want to consider locations that speak to your couple, align with their vision, and most importantly fit in line with their beliefs, values and needs for their wedding day.

Finding The Perfect Elopement Location : Choose A Meaningful Place

The first thing you will want to consider when finding the perfect elopement location is a location that is meaningful to both you and your partner. This location can be somewhere you have experienced already together and have memories that you love here or even an incredible new destination that you have always dreamed of seeing. There is something magical in watching a couple experience an epic location for the first time especially on their wedding day. It is also so incredible to see a couple elope in a hometown they grew up in, a family home or their favorite national park hiking trail. There are so many heightened emotions in saying I do in a location meaningful to you as a couple, it only makes sense to make this a big factor in finding the perfect elopement location for your special day.

Finding The Perfect Elopement Location : Consider Seasons

Seasons play a huge part in finding a perfect elopement location. Different locations throughout the world will have peek and off seasons during the year. For example, where I live in Arizona, it is common for our couples to elope in Arizona in the spring or fall. Summer season in Arizona is extremely hot and unsafe to be outdoors and hiking in these higher temps. When researching different elopement locations you will want to consider the best time of year to elope here. What will the weather look like? Will you need rain boots or an umbrella? Or will you need extra water, cool clothes and a way to cool down? Will this location be busier during peek season? Are there road closures during this time of year? These are all important things to consider when eloping during different seasons of the year. Road closures during winter may prevent easy access to popular locations or you may require snowshoes to hike a snow packed trail – which is absolutely okay, but it is something you will need to consider! During peek season you may need to plan further out to secure permits in time for your elopement along with accommodations since it will be a busier time of year. For popular locations you may need to consider a sunrise ceremony or a remote location to keep things intimate and avoid bigger crowds.

Finding The Perfect Elopement Location : Let An Activity Guide You

The possibilities are endless when it comes to incorporating activities into your elopement day. Whether you are an avid hiker or just love the idea of saying your vows at the top of a beautiful mountain peak, letting an activity guide you to finding the perfect elopement location is key. If your dream has always been to elope in Alaska with glaciers, you know immediately that one of your activities could look like a helicopter tour to the glacier, personal vows and if you are feeling extra brave, even taking a polar plunge. Or your vision for ending the day could look like a sunrise hot air balloon ride, a helicopter tour over the state, horseback riding, kayaking, rock climbing at your favorite trail, a sunset hike, the list goes on and on. Sometimes our couples come to us ready to go and already have a plan for the day for what they would like to do and some have an idea but need help with the logistics, that is where we come in. Your elopement photographer and guide can help you find a location suitable for the activity you want, the best time of year and other experiences that will give you the wedding experience of a lifetime.

Finding The Perfect Elopement Location : Research Research Research

We can say with confidence that some of the most incredible places to elope in the United States are on the roads less traveled, but that does not mean you can’t get a little inspiration from researching through social media platforms. Google, Instagram and Pinterest are all really helpful in the early stages of planning to help give you an idea on what locations pull at your heart strings. Once you have an idea of what you like it will be so much easier finding the perfect elopement location for you and your partner.

This is where we would come in – as your elopement photographer and guide we love helping our couples see these less popular locations because they are less crowded, more intimate and insanely beautiful. The popular places on social media are easier to envision, sure. That is because there are thousands of photos that help make the idea seem more real, but with that also comes crowds and a less intimate setting. When you are willing to step outside of the trendy locations on Instagram there is a world of opportunity in dreamy off the beaten path locations. Wandering Weddings has a great blog about different locations to elope if you need any inspiration to kick start your location planning!

Accessibility

A big factor to consider when finding the perfect elopement location is accessibility. Accessibility is important for a few reasons, whether you are making the decision to elope just the two of you or to include close family or friends, considering how accessible locations are will help to narrow it down to a location that checks all of your boxes. In cases where couples decide to elope just the two of them, it is easier to pick an off road epic adventure location because you are able to make the hike or pay for an off-road vehicle tour or if you are feeling especially adventurous renting a 4×4 yourself and making an off-road activity part of your elopement plans. With guests into consideration, it is typically more difficult to coordinate getting several other guests off-road up to an epic location. Or maybe you have family who are older and have a harder time walking longer distances. In these instances it is best to have a location that has an accessible trail for ease to all members attending and then after ceremony you and your partner can escape for your adventure and some time alone for experiences just the two of you.

At The End Of The Day

Eloping is intentional. Eloping is making the decision to make your day about you instead of social media, instead of family or any one else’s needs or wants. It is making the brave decision to not only do something different but to have an experience true to you as a couple. When finding the perfect elopement location absolutely allow yourself to search all outlets but give yourself the space to be creative and think outside of the box. You never know what trail you might end up on. After all is said and done, what matters most is YOU ARE MARRYING YOUR PERSON. Your dream elopement location will help create an unforgettable experience and memories that will last you a lifetime. But this is only the start of your adventure!

How to Elope Step 1: Envision Your Dream Wedding Day

colorado elopement

When you are first looking into how to elope, a big task that you will want to start with is envisioning what your wedding day will actually look like. The best way to brainstorm ideas that will truly make the most of your elopement day is to sit together and dream about what means the most to you on your wedding, things you would love to experience together and what time of year or scenery is pulling at your heart. A fun date night would be a great time to do this together! It is important to keep an open mind when envisioning your elopement day. This is a place for you to think of your wildest dreams. If you could elope anywhere in the world, where would it be? What landscapes scream your name? Try not to get caught up in the logistics just yet of what you can and can not do. This is a time to be open minded and lay all of your ideas out on the table.

How to Elope Step 2: Create An Inspiration Board

san diego elopement

Creating an inspiration board plays a huge part in how to elope in a way that encompasses everything that you love and want to be a part of your wedding day.I know it may seem cliche to say to look at Pinterest but it is actually a great way to look into other couples elopements, get an idea of different and unique things that you can incorporate into your day and see different locations that you may not have even thought about. It is important to put together colors and styles on your inspiration board that you are drawn to, this will help you tie in flowers, decor if you have any, colors for attire and will also help your photographer to determine locations that may work best for the color and style you are looking for. If you still need any help thinking of some great styles, we loved the style of this Airbnb elopement!

How to Elope Step 3: Determine A Budget

san diego elopement

When determining your budget, it is essential to look into how to elope in whichever area your eyes are set on. This can mean researching several different locations as costs will be different ranges in different areas of the world but it will give you a good estimate to go off of. The average for a traditional wedding in the US is $34,000, but you can absolutely have an incredible elopement for less than half of that cost. Expect to spend a majority of your budget on photography and the rest on travel, attire, rings, flowers, hair & makeup, an officiant, food, activities, and your marriage license. This is definitely the least exciting part in wedding planning but it is very important to determine a budget range early on so that you can see what experiences may be doable and what you should not waste as much time on. We suggest starting at a base range that you are both comfortable with and then a top range of your budget where it is not as likely you will get to unless you find an out of this world experience that you HAVE to do. It is definitely easier to splurge when it comes to experiences that excite you!

How to Elope Step 4: Begin Research

how to elope in sedona

Research plays a big part in determining what you will need to do in order to have your elopement at a certain location. You will need to look into how to elope at certain locations. This can mean looking into permits, regulations, weather and the best season to get married at your destination. When determining your ceremony site, make sure you first confirm that it is legal to have a ceremony or photos taken there. Certain locations may or may not allow this and it is important to realize and plan for a new location rather than showing up and finding out the hard way. As well as any restrictions you will want to stay up to date on any permits your destination may require. Some locations require multiple permits for both you and your photographer so it is important that you check into your sites rules and regulations to make sure you do not hit any bumps in the road on your elopement day. It is also important to look into weather and seasons at different locations as this plays a huge part in how to elope in these places. Different locations will be busier during certain times of the year based on the weather, meaning you may want to plan around these to avoid hikers or large crowds of tourists. You also want to research so that you know what to pack to keep yourselves comfortable and prepared. Will you need thermals for cooler weather? An extra change of clothes if your location has rainstorms frequently? Hiking boots for a rugged hike to your ceremony? These are all key factors to keep in mind when planning your elopement day!

How to Elope Step 5: Decide On A Location

superstition mountains elopement

At this point, you should have a location nailed down. This is the part where you look into how to elope in that part of the world. Now that you have your budget decided, an inspiration board filled with the most magical ideas, you have researched a ton on different locations and seasons – it is time to decide on where to hold your wedding day! If Arizona made the cut, we have a great list of the best places to elope in Arizona. Certain factors to keep in mind when deciding on this location are: Do you want this experience to be just the two of you? Do you want family and friends to join you on your epic elopement, if so how many will you have join you? Once you have nailed down who and how many people you will be expecting for your big day then it becomes easier to nail down specifics like exact locations for a ceremony, an adventurous hike to bridals or a cozy camping spot to stargaze at the end of the night. Another great thing about elopements is that couples often can save money by eloping and combine their elopement with their honeymoon to their destination of choice, it’s a win win!

How to Elope Step 6: Start Booking Your Dream Vendors

sedona elopement

The next and our personal favorite step is to book your dream vendors! If the elopement day is only the two of you it is especially important to book the right photographer and videographer quickly as those will be the only real images and memories you will have for the day, you want someone who can capture it perfectly for you. This is also a great time to book other services for your elopement day such as florist, hair, make up and experiences like a helicopter ride, renting paddle boards or kayaks, a boat tour or a hot air ballon ride! How to elope and have the best experience is to make sure you and all of your vendors are on the same page, this can mean sharing timelines, vision boards or viewing galleries prior to the elopement day to ensure your vision fits their styles!

How to Elope Step 7: Book Lodging, Rental Cars and Flights

catalina island elopement

Depending on where you are eloping as well you will need to research on if your location requires an officiant, if you can self-solemnize or have your photographer sign for you, if they are ordained. When booking other services like flights, lodging and rental vehicles keep it mind that the closer your hotel is to the ceremony site, the more streamlined your timeline will be. You will also want to keep in mind lodging size if you are expecting guests, you may want to look into a larger Airbnb or a hotel block so that you can all stay close together. When it comes to transportation you will need to factor in how traveling to your ceremony location will look like. If it is a rugged road that requires off roading you will need to look into a 4×4 or consider a rental company that provides an off road service.

How to Elope Step 8: Start Thinking About Wedding Attire and Details

superstition mountain elopement

This is such a fun step, especially if you have decided to go the route of no guests. We have found that a great way to keep family feeling involved in the wedding process without actually being present on the day of is to invite them along on some wedding errands – especially dress or tux shopping! When deciding on attire try to keep in mind the location that you have chosen and elements that will look beautiful in these places. An example of this was this epic wedding in San Francisco where our couple had a traditional dress for their ceremony and then changed into her more functional but fabulous dress to attend outside lands for their reception see it here! Factors you will want to keep in mind are if your location requires lots of hiking or uncertain weather where you would need to bring a change of shoes and some extra clothes to keep warm. If you will need to bring an umbrella to shield yourselves from rain or a change of clothes if you are wanting to change into your dress at your ceremony location. This is a great time to pack momentos, letters from relatives or any heirlooms!

How to Elope Step 9: Finalize Details

cabo elopement

To keep yourselves feeling free of stress make sure that you finalize a game plan ahead of time. It is easiest to make a 1 month, 1 week and 2 day prior schedule to ensure that you have taken care of any last minute duties. All vendors should be booked at this time and have a copy of your day of timeline to be best prepared as well as your marriage license if needed. This is also a great time to plan a surprise for your significant other like a gift, a special song to share your first dance or letters from family members that could not attend. You will want to sketch our a rough timeline and check list to keep everything running smoothly, make sure you take adequate time to eat, drink and rest so that you can enjoy yourselves!

How to Elope Step 10: Announce the big news to family and friends!

sedona elopement

A big question we get is how to elope without feeling like we are not including our family and friends. The choice to elope is a big, bold and brave decision that ultimately only you can make but it is so worth it. It can be tough making the choice to elope without friends and family. A few things that you can do to help ease uneasy family members is to keep them involved as much as you can. You can bring them dress shopping with you, make lunch or dinner plans together to talk about activities you will be doing during your elopement, take them along to florist appointments or even throw a BBQ “reception” to still include family in your celebration. Ultimately, this is up to you and your comfort level and what you feel comfortable including family members on!

Are you ready to start planning the elopement of your dreams? Let’s start planning!

If you are planning a sunrise Elopement you will have a better chance of getting into the parking lot but keep in mind that if you are dead set on a sunset Elopement, weekends are nearly impossible and week days may be doable IF you are able to get a Sedona Uber or shuttle service which is also very difficult with the lack of Uber services in Sedona. This location also requires a steep hike on all fours to get to the lookout – it’s worth the view but no easy task!
  • Nearby Activities
    • Hiking, camping, off-roading, star gazing, wineries, jeep tours, hot air balloon rides.

  • Location
    • Apache Junction, Arizona – 40 minute drive from Sky Harbor Airport. The best time of year to Elope in Page is September-April.
  • Permitting
    • There are several different locations near the Superstition Mountains. If you are going into a recreational area like Lost Dutchman you will need to pay for a parking pass, photo and wedding permit. You can access their permit information and application here! Other areas around the Superstitions will be more private and you may not necessarily need to pay for a permit for these locations.
  • Accessibility & Crowds
    • Lost Dutchman will be one of the only locations in the Superstition Mountains that will be accessible by 2 wheel drive. Make sure you ask your Photographer about certain locations, if you can carpool or if you’ll need to rent a different vehicle to get to more intense locations. On weekends more popular areas around the Superstitions will be a bit more packed than a weekday with hikers, it isn’t unbearable though and there are plenty of more hidden gems that your Photographer can take you to to avoid these crowds!

sedona elopement

How to Elope in Arizona : Merry Go Round

  • Location
    • Sedona, Arizona – 2 hour drive from Sky Harbor Airport. The best time of year to Elope here is September-May.
  • Accessibility & Crowds
    • For this location, the road is extremely rough, unpaved and has large rocks that you will need to crawl over in a high clearance 4×4. You can absolutely use one of Sedona’s many jeep tour companies but the down side is that you will not get to choose how long you spend up there. It’s best to rent your own vehicle and make the trek up. You can expect about 45 minutes of rock crawling to get to the top of Merry Go Round. Crowds are very manageable here with how tough of a location it is to get to!
